The Trivandrum Golf Club is located in a pagoda shaped heritage building of the colonial era, which is more than a 100 years old and is known for the typical Kerala Architecture. The building has an area of 7000 sq ft, has an antique door with elaborate trellis work.
Trivandrum Golf Club has the second oldest Golf course in the whole world the first being in Great Britain. Travancore Royal family established the Golf Course in the 1850's but never got the attention, importance and the publicity it should have got. To highlight this fact the trivandrum Golf club planned and decided to conduct a publicity drive by holding golf tournaments and allied activities and sell "Golf in God's own country. "

This is a course with nine holes and is well maintained with mostly straight and fairways. The greens are small and cut roughly and so the hazards are less. Sand traps lie around the greens. The Trivandrum Golf club is a refreshing and soothing one with a nice and friendly course. Nature is at its best and one who visits the place will have beautiful memories of the place.
The nine-hole golf course at the Trivandrum Golf Club is one of the smallest but the prettiest in the country. HISTORY

Thirty years ago, Kovalam, was a tiny fishing village, known for its fresh fish, fruits and toddy (coconut beer). The potential of this tiny village fishing ground being a tourist destination came when Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore constructed her beach resort at the end of the 1920's. The European crowd gave attention to the Kovalam beach in the 1930's, and it came into limelight when several hippies visited Kovalam in the early 70's. Today, the beach is also known as 'Paradise of the South'.

ETYMOLOGY

Kovalam means grove of coconut trees, and true to its name, the suburb offers large numbers of cocunut trees to witness and enjoy.

Kovalam, mainly a beach town, and famous for its beaches, is situated on the Arabian Sea, and is around 16 kms from the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. It is also around 13 kms from the Central business district.

The beaches of Kovalam, which is crescent-shaped is usually divided into three different beaches.

* Lighthouse Beach


Lighthouse beach is the southern part of Kovalam beach and the most poplar among the three. It offers a magnificent view of the Vizhinzam mosque and its vast surroundings. The cool winds blowing from the Arabian Sea, and walking barefoot on the soft sands, makes the destination a lot more pleasant and visitable.

*Hawa Beach
It is the middle one of the Kovalam beach, and is the first topless beaches in India. The beach describes a normal day of a fisheman, and is cluttered with a large number of fishermen, who set out to the sea early in the morning to catch fresh fish, which is their main source of livelihood.

*Samudra Beach


The northern part of the Kovalam beach, it is a laid-back and quiet beach, ideal for naturelovers and sunbathers. It is over here that the trade of fishermen takes place.

*Ashoka Beach
It boasts of having the first, finest and largest five-star beach resort of Kerala, including 4 royal suites in the Halcyon Castle, the construction of the Maharaja himself.

*Vizhinjam Lighthouse

Its mesmerizing view attracts large number of tourists. An interesting and added attraction to the lighthouse, is that it spreads out light even in the dark at regular intervals. This light, emitted all over brings about aromatic touch to the tourist spot.

I have already mentioned about the two museums which are seen in the Koyikkal Palace. The Numismatics museum contains coins that are obtained from different eras as well as different parts of the world. The Numismatics museum is present in the ground floor of the Koyikkal Palace. Ottaputhen, Erattaputhen, Kaliyugarayan Panam (oldest coins of Kerala state), Amaida (Venetian coin presented to Jesus Christ) etc are the important properties of this Numismatics museum. Other valuable items present in the Numismatics museum are Karsha, Rasi, Sreekrishna Rasi, Anantharayan Panam, Kochi Puthen, Lakshmi Varaham, Coin Mints & Rasi Palaka. Karsha is a 2500 year old coin & it is considered to be the most valuable Indian coin that is present in the Numismatics museum of the Koyikkal Palace located in Nedumangad. When considering Rasi that is present in this museum, note that it is the world's smallest coin. But Sreekrishna Rasi is one of the regional coins that was issued by the local kings who ruled Kerala in the 10th century. In simple terms we can say that Rasi Palaka is a coin board. That means it is a board made of wood that is used for counting small coins. The first modern gold coin which was in circulation in Travancore during the 15th & 17th centuries is the Anantharayan Panam. But when considering Kochi Puthen & Lakshmi Varaham, the former is the coin of Kochi Kingdom while latter is the silver coins minted in Travancore.

When you visit the Folklore museum, you may be able to see the household utensils, models of folkarts, musical instruments, occupational implements etc.It should be noted that the Folklore museum is located on the first floor of the Koyikkal palace. If you visit this Folklore museum, you may be able to see the different items like brass/copperware, wooden kitchenware, old manuscripts (thaliyola), the dress & headgear used by the artists of Ottamthullal, lamp representing the goddess of prosperity (Gajalakshmi) etc. Apart from this, you may be able to see some other items like maravuri, chilambu used by Umayama Rani, oorakkudukku, kettuvillakku, a model of Muthappan theyyam, patayani kolam model, chandravalayam, nanthuni etc in the Folklore museum of Koyikkal Palace.

I have already mentioned that Koyikkal Palace is located in Nedumangad, Trivandrum in Kerala. The nearest bus station, railway station & airport are that of Thiruvananthapuram central bus station, Thiruvananthapuram railway station & Thiruvananthapuram International airport respectively. Another fact is that the Koyikkal Palace is located very close to the Nedumangad KSRTC bus station. So the easiest way to reach the palace is by travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Nedumangad. The visiting hours of this palace is from 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM on all days (except Mondays).

KANNUR DISTRICT- PLACES OF INTEREST FOR TOURISTS

Kannur – How the name came into Being: There are two versions of as to how the name Kannur came into being. As per one version, this place is known in ancient days as Kanathur and this word gradually changed to Kannur. There is a small place by the name Kanathur a ward of the Town to corroborate this version. The other version is that the name is derived from Kannan Oor (place of Kannan). On the South Eastern side of the Town there is a place by name Kadalayi. In this place there is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna. Later during British time it became Cananore, Kannannur and now Kannur.

Places of Tourist Interest

Beaches:

Payyambalam beach – This beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of Kerala. It is just 2 kms away from the Kannur Town. The beach is having the rocks jutting out into the sea at one end. It is a neat and long beach. The beach is being further developed by the KSTDC with theme parks mainly of Malabar folk arts.

Muzhuppilangad Beach - This is about 4.5 kms in length. This is one of the rare beaches of India where vehicle can be driven without getting stuck. Hence this is known as a drive in beach. Since the sea near the beach is not rough and deep, this is a paradise for swimmers. This beach is 15 kms from Kannur towards Thalasseri and 8 kms from Thalasseri to Kannur. There are good roads from both the centers. Facilities to enjoy the natural beauty of Dharmadam Isle are available here. Places for safe bathing are being identified for the safety of the tourists.

Meenkunnu Beach – This is a beach at Azhikode within few Kms of Kannur Town.
Mopila Bay – It is near to St Angelo's Fort, has a fishing harbor. During season boat ride available.

Dharmadam Isle – This is a small isle full of coconut trees. This can be reached by boats from the spot called Moithu Bridge on the National Highway. During the ebb season it can be reached by foot. However, it will be slippery and is full of rocks. It is only about 100 meters from the Muzhuppilangad Beach. From the Isle people can see the rocks around the isle, the beauty of the beach and the Thalasseri Town in distance. It is now in owned by private people.

Forts:

St. Angelo Fort – This fort also known as the Kannur Fort is in triangle shape. 2 of its sides face the sea. It is built by Portuguese and the Dutch captured from them. The Dutch sold this to the Raja and the British took over it. Now it is under the Archeological Survey of India. From this fort one can see the sea, the lush green coconut groves, fishing harbor Mopila Bay and the Arakkal kettu.

Thalasseri Fort – Tourists interested in history can find this as a valuable fort. This is in the Thiruvallippad hill of Thalasseri town, about 20 kms from Kannur. This is built by the British East India Company with red bricks. The British fought the Kolathiris, Tipu and the Pazhassiraja from this fort. The fort is used as jail, currency mint.

Pazhi Kotta – It is at the southern side of the hill, one can find the remains of a fort called Pazhi Kotta on the Maadaayipaara hillock of Ezhimala kings. The remains of the 4 watch towers at the four corners for the fort can also be seen.

The Gundert Bungalow – This is not a fort, but the residence of Rev. Dr. Hermann Gundert, a German missionary. His contribution to Malayalam is the compilation of a Malayalam grammar book, Malayala Bhasha Vyakaranam, Malayalam-English dictionary and translation of Bible into Malayalam.

Picnic places on Hillocks

Pythalmala is on the Kerala-Karnataka border is 65 km north of Kannur. It is considered as a small hill station. It is about 1,371.6 meters above sea level. It is a good place for those interested in trekking.

Ezhimala - Ezhimala, a cluster of hills was the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings. It is 38 kms from Kannur towards north. There is a belief that Buddha had visited this place. It has sea on 3 sides and one can spot dolphins in the sea around this area. This is a place famous for medicinal herbs/plants.

Maadaayipaara - It is a hillock was the administrative center of the Ezhimala Kings. For some time it was the place where the Kolathunadu rules used to be coroneted. It has got several historical remnants from the past. Parassinikkadavu Snake Park – It is a famous snake park with several varieties of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes including different types of Cobras. Rajarajeswara Temple in Thaliparamba Kannur:

The Rajarajeswara temple in Thaliparamba in Kannur district is one of the famous Shiva Temples in Kerala in general and in North Malabar in particular. This temple is also known ‘THRICHAMBARAM’ temple for the devotees in and around Kannur and Kasargod districts. Devotees are coming to the Rajarajeswara Temple not only from these twin districts but even from other districts also. Few months back when there was a crisis in the Karnataka government, the Chief Minister of Karnataka - our neighboring state - Shri B.S. Yediyurappa visited the temple for the blessings of Lord Rajarajeswara. Few years back the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Smt. Jayalalitha have donated an elephant to the temple as a mark of her extreme religious zeal and affection to the Thrichambarathappan. In the main deity of this temple is both Lord Vishnu – the creator and maintainer of Universe – and Lord Shiva – the terminator - are represented and therefore the temple is called Shree Rajarajeswara – the Lord of Supreme.

History Behind The Rajarajeswara Temple:

The Shiva Lingam here is believed to be several thousands of years old. The story of the temple goes like this. A sage started praying lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pleased with the prayer (Thapuss) and presented one Shiva Lingam to him and said that the Shiva Lingam should be installed in such a place where there is no burial ground. After a long search, he found a suitable place to install the Shiva Lingam in Thaliparamba. Another story being told is that Lord Shiva gave three sacred Shiva Lingam to Parvathi for worship. Once upon a time a sage – Maandhata - won the favour of Lord Shiva with intense prayers. Siva was so pleased that he presented one of the Siva Lingams to him with the restriction that it should be installed only at a place where there was no burial ground. The sage, after searching all over, found the place Thaliparamna the most sacred spot and installed the Lings in Thaliparamba.

Thaliparamba is on the National Highway–17 and the Rajarajeswara temple is situated 23 Kms. northeast of Kannur city. From Kasargod 83 Kms towards south. EZHIMALA HILL, KANNUR

Historical Importance of Ezhimala

Ezhimala has a strong link with the Indian Epic " Ramayana ". During Rama- Ravana war, Ravana killed many of the Rama forces including Lakshmana. Then Lord Hanuman went to Himalaya Mountain to collect the medicine "Mrithasanjeevani" which has the power to bring back died one's to life. While taking the Himalaya mountain with "Mrithasanjeevani", a small part of the mountain was dropped from Hanumans hand and it fell in seven parts( one touching the other) near the Payyanur- Ramanthali coastal region. It is believed that the presence of Lord Hanuman is still there at Ezhimala Hills. It is also believed that Ezhimala was visited by Lord Buddha who was the founder of Buddhism.

The Indian Naval Academy (NAVAC) of the Indian Navy wing situated at Ezhimala was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on eighth January 2009. Naval Academy of Ezhimala is located over 2,452 acres of land. It is a restricted area that the public are not allowed inside the Naval Academy area without permission. Parassinikadavu snake park is one among the best known tourist attractions located about 16km away from Kannur town. CHIMMINI WILD LIFE SANCTUARY,THRISSUR

 

Chimmini Wild Life Sanctuary is one of the eco-tourism project of Kerala Tourism. Chimmini Wild Life Sanctuary is located at Mukundapuram Taluk of Thrissur District of Kerala state, in India. It is on the Western slopes of the Nelliyampathi hills. It is located along with the neighboring Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary and lies just west of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary. The Chimmony river and its tributaries in the forests which are tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen forest and the moist deciduous forests, gives an attraction to the trucking ways of chimmini.

Attractions in Chimmini Wild Life Sanctuary

There are so many birds and butterflies here, so this is the most suitable place for trekking and camping. The second largest butterfly in the western ghats- Southern Bird Wing is occur here. The other attractions are lion-tailed macaque(Simhavalan Kurangu). The sanctuary also offers trekking paths for the adventure traveller. Kerala Forest department is the organizer of Trekking here. You can choose trekking for one day, for half day and for 3 hours. There is also journey through bamboo rafts(Mulam Changadam). There are facilities for bamboo rafts which longs for from 2 hours to 1 day. The most interesting one is the bamboo raft with seeing full moon. The bamboo raft journey temporarily discontinued after Thekkady Boat Tragedy. There is also tent Camping in forest which is also known as eco camping. There are two types of camping here: 1500 rs/- for one person and 2,500 Rs- for one person.
